Vidya Balan to play a sex months’ pregnant woman in ‘Kahaani’
Vidya Balan is known for the ease and poise with which she plays various complex characters but the role she is set to play in Sujoy Ghosh’s ‘Kahaani’ is such which not many Bollywood babes would dare to play. She will be seen as a six motnhs pregnant woman with a belly in the entire film. In the flick, Vidya’s husband travels from London to India for work. However, he goes missing and she comes to Kolkata in search of him. Shot in Kolkata and London the film will be out some time mid 2011 and the Kolkata schedule of the flick has already been wrapped up.
Says Sujoy, “It’s the story of a woman who’s six months pregnant and her journey. I had written the script keeping Vidya in mind. I wouldn’t have made the film without her. For me she’s a perfectionist who has beautifully brought the character alive.”
He adds, “She made it look so effortless. She never compromised on any aspect of filmmaking. Since cinema is a visual medium it was very important for her to look the part. There is lot of simplicity in her character and at the same time great turmoil within.
Also there were boundaries because a pregnant woman isn’t Batman or Superman. She can’t do much, there’s only so much you can make her do. But the beauty lies in the vulnerability and subtle nuances that she’s used to play the character.”

A sneek peak into ‘Mirch’
Vinay Shukla’s upcoming movie ‘Mirch’ revolves around Maanav, who is a struggling filmmaker who is unwilling to compromise on the script he has written. His girlfriend Ruchi, a successful film editor, arranges for him to meet Nitin, a film producer. Nitin likes the script, but is not very sure of its commercial prospects. Maanav then suggests a story from the Panchtantra. Nitin loves the story, but finds it too short for a feature film. Maanav then creates three more stories based on the same premise: in a way, the Panchantra story travels in different versions to the modern times through the film. The four stories are woven together by a common story. Mirch itself echoes this structure, with four stories mingling with the main narrative.
According to the director of Mirch, Vinay Shukla, “Mirch is structured like a square with a cross-section of 4 squares within it. Each square represents one season, has a different colour-palette and contains a story complete in itself with a witty twist in the end.”
He says further, “The stories run the course of time; from ancient India to today’s India. The first story has been sourced from the ancient Sanskrit classic, the Panchtantra; the source of the second story is the 14th century Italian classic, the ‘Decameron,’ by Boccaccio.”
“Inspiration for the third story comes from another ancient Italian story. Rest of the 2 stories are penned by me,” he adds.
Mirch has Konkona Sen Sharma as Lavni / Anita, Shreyas Talpade as Manjul, Shahana Goswami as Ruchi, Boman Irani as Asu Hotmal, Raima Sen as Maya / Manjula, Arunoday Singh as Maanav and Rajpal Yadav as Kashi.

This time Rajshree Productions’s Prem turns Vivaan
Finally, Barjatya of Rajshree productions have got over with the obsession of the name ‘Prem’. Vivaan is the new chosen name for them. Debutant Akshay Oberoi in ‘Isi Life Men’ plays the role of Vivaan for Rajshree.
Well, there is no need to be disheartened about it, as according to Akshay, there is only one suitable man for the role of man and he is ‘Salman Khan’. “I have no qualms whatsoever if I am called Vivaan and not Prem in the film. I think the name ‘Prem’ is very iconic for Sooraj Barjatya and Salman bhai.”
The Salman Khan fan further added, “However if you ask me, this is one name that is reserved for him. As a Salman fan, I truly believe that he is the ultimate Prem.”
It is not only Salman who has been called Prem in Rajshree films. Barjatya has made exceptions to the rule. Hritik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan in ‘Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon’, Shahid Kapoor in ‘Vivah’ and Sonu Sood in ‘Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi’ have also been named Prem.
There is another change seen in the characterization. There are different shades to the character that the lead actor portrays in the film ‘Isi Life Mein’. “Yes, it’s an altogether different Prem that you would see in a Rajshri film this time around with ISI LIFE MEIN,” confirms Akshay.

KJo bewildered by the offer for ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’
Vishal Bhardwaj offered Bollywood director Karan Johar the role of a sex manic and wife-beater husband of Priyanka Chopra in ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’. KJo was bewildered to get such an offer and said, “From what angle do I look like a wife-beater? And how could I enact a scene making love to Priyanka Chopra! And that too as a sex maniac! There is no way I could do this.”
News has it that KJo was horrified at the character he was offered to play, but his horror did not stop Irrfan Khan from playing that role! It is believed that had Karan been a part of the film, it would have been the most unusual casting.
Vishal Bhardwaj did not talk to Karan directly but sent feelers through Piggie Chops. According to sources “Vishal requested his heroine to put in a word. She promptly did. As soon as Karan heard about the casting offer, he was mighty amused initially. But then wondered how on earth he could essay a wife beater!”

Problematic climax turns into ‘No Problem’
Anees Bazmee’s movie No Problem is shot elaborately in Durban, Cape Town and Mumbai. Everything was designed meticulously and finalized and executed with a lot of detailing. However, little mishaps cannot be avoided even after giving attention to minutest details.
In the climax scene, the entire cast is supposed to be frantically looking for lost diamonds when a bomb explodes. The explosion is to cause a huge fish tank filled with almost 60,000 litres of water to break! Being a one-shot climax scene, things were expected to go as intended.
But by chance the fish tank exploded with much greater force causing the water to rush out with immense force and flooding the whole set. A lot of equipments including the camera were damaged. Fortunately, the reel was saved and all was restored to normal soon enough. And thus to conclude, the scene was executed superbly!
The problem turns into a No Problem!

‘No Problem’ for ‘Band Baaja Baraat’
Anees Bazmi’s ‘No Problem’ and Yashraj Film`s ‘Band Baaja Baraat’ clash as both the films are slated for a Dec 10 release. The viewers are kept awaited in the suspense that which movie would be left in problem and which one would be welcomed with a band baaja!
“I don’t believe in lucky dates, but I do believe in commitments. We had decided to release ‘No Problem’ on Dec 10 long ago. I have three releases next year, so I needed to get the film out of the way this year,” says Anees.
“We worked at breakneck speed to finish ‘No Problem’ and announced our release date months ago. It was only later that I heard ‘Band Baja Baraat’ is coming on the same date,” added the hyperactive director.
This isn’t the fist time when we see a clash in two big-budgeted films. ‘Golmaal 3’ and ‘Action Replayy’ released on Diwali this year and one of them had to taste the ground!
Anees admitted his unhappiness with the clash. “It’s never advisable to bring two big films on the same day. If anyone, then they should move because we locked in the date first. But I think Yashraj is superstitious about the second week of December because their ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ released during the same week in 2008 and was a hit.”

“When my producer Vipul Shah decided to add an extra n in `king` for ‘Singh Is Kinng’ I told him please add one more `n` if it helps the box-office. It’s the product that matters. I know we have a fabulously funny film in “No Problem” and I am sure ‘Band Baaja Baraat’ is also a terrific film. If a clash is not avoided, then I’ll pray for both films,” Anees says as he believes in work more than luck.
Yashraj camp is in no mood for postponement and feels that there is enough space at the box office for both the films.

The forthcoming ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’ stars the three Deols together and is a family drama of a man in search of his estranged family. Paramveer Singh Dhillon (Sunny), an upright and honest man working as a loan recovery agent in a bank stays with his mother, his Canadian wife (Mary) and two sons in Vancouver, Canada.
